If you’ve ever stood on or near the edge of a cliff overlooking, say, Yosemite Valley or other vista then you know the feeling of being light headed for an instant. Without trying to speak for you I have experienced this on El Capitan, in Yosemite. That was long ago when I was a young man. Always trying to go the next step toward foolishness.
Recently in, say, that last several years I am noticing a rather severe lack of balance in our world. One thing after another both in America or in the world at large which have the portent of danger for all of us. Be it Russia or China or from South America peace is getting hard to discern from the infighting of so many regions. All it would take is for one unbalanced individual to become full of himself and push that little red button that seems to have returned from the 1950s and the Cold War.
For a number of years, decades maybe, all of us who grew up in that time have had fear of the little red button and a madman who could not resist pushing it. One of the ways I regained my balance was to begin, at age twelve, reading the bible. No one told me to, I just wanted to. That was when I found balance and that balance is the reassurance that, though we die inevitably, there is a promise of life after death. In a way, this may sound like science fiction or some Heinlein novel but it comes from the bible, which is truth whether we understand God’s word or not.
Rest assured that it is God’s word and that He gave us the bible just for the reason of balance in our lives. A way to cope with that which is outside our control. Be that while in prison, sailing on a yacht, or standing way too close to the edge of a cliff overlooking a valley. The bible is here with surcease, knowledge and foresight for those who are willing to push this world aside for God. This world is going nowhere. We are and our final destination is obvious to all of us if we are realists. Balance. That is what the bible allows us to have in this sick world of ours.
